A Little About FIPS 201
FIPS Pub 201 defines the PIV card that forms the basis for a new generation of Federal employee and contractor identification credentials. Titled Personal Identity Verification (PIV) of Federal Employees and Contractors, this specification is a requirement of HSPD-12 that was announced by the White House in 2004 to tackle the issues of inconsistent and potentially insecure forms of identification used to access Federal buildings and information systems.
